Joshua Stecker, editor of San Pedro Today and West Coast editor of Script Magazine, is coming to the magazine production class Tuesday, Nov. 16 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. If you want to sit in you’re welcome to do just that. The magazine class meets in H-111. PLEASE DO NOT COME LATE! It is rude to our guest for you to arrive late. If you can arrive at or before 4:30 p.m., great. If not, then this event is not for you. If you arrive late, you will not be eligible for any extra credit points for this event. Any questions? Let me know. Otherwise, I hope to see you there!

Extra Credit – Obituary

You can earn up to 20 extra points by writing an obituary. Here are the guidelines:

1. Connect with a student in class. Your obituary must be a student from class.
2. Interview that student. Be sure to consult your handout on the basic information included in an obituary.
3. Write a 500-word obituary that follows the format outlined in the handout and discussed in class.
4. For cause of death, use EITHER died suddenly or had a long illness. Nothing way out or wacky. The when of the death is either yesterday or last week.
5. This is due on or before Nov. 10.

Notes: Make sure you follow AP style and class formatting guidelines. Be sure to re-read your work and make it sing. Remember that writing an obituary is a big responsibility. Have respect and do your best to paint a picture of the person and his or her life. Good obituaries are about life not death!

Above all else YOU MUST SPELL THE SUBJECT’S NAME CORRECTLY. Obituaries with misspelled subject names get zero points.

Extra, extra credit: If someone writes an obituary about you, there is a chance for you to earn five points. All you have to do is come see me BEFORE THE DUE DATE OF NOV. 10 and let me know that an obit on you is coming in and you’d like to edit it for hte extra 5 points. I’ll give you the obit when it comes in and you take it home and edit it. Note how accurate the obit it. Take notes on the obit and mention what you think worked in it and what didn’t. Turn the original obit in with your edits the next week, Nov. 17.

Any questions? let me know. Good luck.

Extra Credit – “Engaged Observers” at The Getty Center

You can earn up to 10 extra credit points by checking out the Getty Center’s “Engaged Observers” exhibit. Check out the exhibit by clicking on the link. The Getty Center is free and no reservations are required. Click on this link for information on planing a visit.

While at the exhibit, have a notebook with you and take detailed notes on the photographs and the experience. Then once you’re home, write up a 2-page response paper that address the following:

Start with a paragraph that summarizes the event, very much like a hard news lead would do. Give me the 5Ws of your experience. (Unlike in a hard news story, you can feel free to use the first-person perspective — “I”– in this piece.) Next describe the overall exhibit. How big was it? What did it contain? What was the theme? How many people were there, etc.? Provide a detailed description of the event and the experience. Lastly, identify your favorite photograph from the exhibit, who shot it, and why it is your favorite one of the bunch. Be sure to describe the image IN DETAIL because I won’t have seen it. It’s up to you to paint a word picture of the image.

The deadline for this extra credit opportunity is Dec. 1. Have fun!
