Joshua Stecker, editor of San Pedro Today and West Coast editor of Script Magazine, is coming to the magazine production class Tuesday, Nov. 16 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. If you want to sit in you’re welcome to do just that. If you want to earn extra credit, you can write a mini-profile of Stecker and I’ll give you up to 10 points. It is due on or before Nov. 24.
The magazine class meets in H-111. PLEASE DO NOT COME LATE! It is rude to our guest for you to arrive late. If you can arrive at or before 4:30 p.m., great. If not, then this event is not for you. If you arrive late, you will not be eligible for any extra credit points for this event. Any questions? Let me know. Otherwise, I hope to see you there!
Thank you.

I went to the police station in San Pedro, explained I was a journalism student on public records search (politely of course) and the police officer at the rather empty station told me, “No, you can’t access that.”
I got excited because I thought this was the part where I take out my CA Public Records Act handout. I read him the part about the police blotter (not forgetting to say “according to”), telling him it might also be called “the watch commander’s log,” and then explained to him what it was exactly. Then, he just told me, “Sorry, I don’t know what you’re talking about. We don’t have such a thing here. Go to LA. It’s that big building. You can’t miss it.”

I didn’t want to impose myself to the man in uniform so I just asked for the address of the LA station, thanked him, and left. I am just going to the police station in Torrance tomorrow hoping I don’t encounter the same.
I feel like I just got denied my right. What could I have done in that situation?

This is typical of many officers who either don’t know the law or don’t want to comply with it for whatever Reason. We’ll talk about it in class, what to do in that situation. For now, go to Torrance and see what happens there. I think you’ll be quite surprised.
